Dice with Special Numbers

In this section we present numbered Dn dice (n=2,3,4,6,8,10,12,20,26,30) with special pips or numbers, i.e. neither 1..n nor 0..n-1.

In the remainder of this section, there are two photos for each die. The left one shows the die with the largest number on top and the next possible largest number clockwise. The right photo shows the die when it is rotated by 180 degrees along the horizontal axis which lies in parallel to the screen. In this way, the opposite faces are shown top-top, left-right and right-left.

The dice are sorted in decreasing order of the largest numbers.

Backgammon Doubling Dice

There are surprisingly many configurations of D6 Backgammon doubling dice. Most “normal” (1..6) D6 are numbered such that opposite faces sum to 7. An analogy for doubling dice would be to print the numbers such that opposite faces multiply to 128 (64x2, 32x4, 16x8). However there is only one such doubling die in my collection of more than 30 different configurations. Most of the dice use a numbering scheme 64-32, 16-8, 4-2 (in a “left-handed” and a “right-handed” version), but there are a few exceptions: 64-16, 32-8, 4-2 (1 die), 64-4, 32-16, 8-2 (2 dice), and 64-32, 16-4, 8-2 (1 die).

If the die is placed such that “64” is on top and “16” on the right, the third number that can be seen is “4”. This configuration is called “left-handed”, because it seems to be less common than the “right handed version, in analogy to pipped D6.
